Henry Hudson discovered the Hudson Valley.
Four hundred years ago English explorer Henry Hudson sailed up the Hudson River in his ship the Half Moon. He had been hired by the Dutch East India Company to find a new passage to Asia. Instead, he discovered a rich area along a river passageway that is today called the Hudson River Valley. Since Hudson’s founding of the Hudson River Valley, ships have sailed up and down the Hudson River carrying goods for commercial trade, as well as for pleasure.
This year communities along the Hudson River are celebrating Henry Hudson’s arrival from Holland in 1609. On June 5-12, 2009, hundreds of boats will reenact Hudson’s travels up the Hudson River by cruising from New York City to Albany –
a 144-mile trip – on Hudson River Day.
